A Yiddish Love Affair: The State of Yiddish Today

Hert a mayse, tayere khaveyrim! How does a Vietnamese-Italian-American, German-speaking, Gentile physicist from suburban Wisconsin become a brenendike Yiddishist—a passionate Yiddish scholar—in four years flat? Giovanna Truong arrived at Yale wanting to become a scientist, but now she is training to be a Yiddish scholar at Oxford. Using pictures, slides, and audio clips, she will walk us through her own journey, which includes handwritten letters, train trips to Williamsburg, and a friendship with a university president with real yichus, or Jewish pedigree. She will teach us the state of Yiddish today: who speaks it, how they speak it, and what it sounds like.
