Saints and Liars: The Americans Who Saved Refugees from the Nazis

Three groups, three motivations, three methods—one shared goal: to save as many lives as possible in the chaos of World War II. Join two renowned Holocaust historians Debórah Dwork and AJU’s Michael Berenbaum as they discuss Saints and Liars, Dwork’s deeply researched account of American aid workers who risked everything to protect refugees from persecution. Through the stories of relief efforts in Marseille, Lisbon, Prague, Vilna, and Shanghai, Saints and Liars reveals the moral dilemmas, life-threatening challenges, and unbreakable resolve of those who defied Nazi oppression. This conversation will shed light on a lesser-known chapter of history, raising critical questions about the intersection of humanitarianism, politics, and resistance.
